Youth Commission Accomplishments:

 2004-2005

  • Contributing to the initial legislation development of the recently passed Joshua’s Law

  • Assisting the Fulton County Human Services Department, Office of Workforce

  • Development with the 2005 North and South Fulton Job Fairs

  • Attending the 2005 Fulton County Citizen’s University

  • Facilitating the 6th Annual Call to Womanhood Conference and the 13th Annual Call to Manhood Conference

  • Meeting with the Department of Environment and Community Development to represent the opinions of youth in the Focus Fulton: 20 Year Comprehensive Plan

  • Distributing and collecting over 1,500 ballots for the 2005Youth Agenda

  • Planning and Hosting the 2004 “Youth 411” Forums on Teen Image and Teen Homelessness

  • Creating the 2005 Fulton County Youth Agenda

  • Presenting the 2005 Fulton County Youth Agenda to the Fulton County Board of Commissioners

  • Participating in the 2005 National Youth Service Day

  • Participating in the Georgia PACE Symposium on Civic Engagement

  • Participating in the Georgia PACE Tsunami Relief Project

  • Participating in an intensive, two (2) day Planning Retreat in Crandall, Georgia

 2003-2004

  • Distributing and collecting over 1,500 ballots for the Youth Agenda

  • Planning and Hosting the 2004 “Youth 411” Forums on Teen Image and Teen Homelessness

  • Participating in the Georgia PACE Symposium on Civic Engagement

  • Facilitating the execution of the 6th Annual Call to Womanhood Conference and the 13th Annual Call to Manhood Conference

  • Meeting with the Department of Environment and Community Development to represent the opinions of youth in the Focus Fulton: 20 Year Comprehensive Plan

  • Participating in the Georgia PACE Tsunami Relief Project

  • Participating in an intensive, two (2) day Planning Retreat in Crandall, Georgia

  • Meeting  with Fulton County Board of Commissioners

  • Becoming a certified Toastmasters International Gavel Club

  • Participating in a two (2) day Retreat in Covington Georgia

  • Conducting focus group meetings in each of the 5 Commission Districts to gather youth issues in the four (4) categories: health, education, family, and violence.  Meetings were conducted at the following locations: Warren/Holyfield Boys & Girls Club, Chattahoocheee High School, Douglass High School, Math and Science Charter High School, Riverwood High School, Washington High School, Northwest Youth Power Inc., The Agbara Foundation, and Southwest YMCA

  • Hosting the “Youth 411” Forums on Teen Dating and Music and the Media, for 55 High School Students, representing 10 schools in Fulton and Atlanta Public Schools.  The “Youth 411” segments were shown on FGTV during the months of December and January

  • Participating in the production of a Homeless Youth Awareness Video with The Homeless Youth Action Network

  • Participating in the Call to Womanhood Conference as panelist and volunteers

  • Attending the following leadership conferences: Youth Day 2003, sponsored by Project South; GAPP Youth Leadership Summit, sponsored by Georgia Alcohol Policy Partnership; and the Youth Leadership Conference 2004, sponsored by GUIDE

  • Conducting a Donut sale fundraiser, and raised $277.50 to purchase gifts to donate to homeless women and children. The gifts were donated to the Atlanta Day Women’s and Children’s Shelter

  • Attending FRESH Public Hearings

  • Participating in District Quarterly Community Listening Sessions

  • Participated in community service initiatives that included: The Great Atlanta Youth Walk, sponsored by Georgia Alliance for Children; Hands On Atlanta Day 2003, at the Historic Oakland Cemetery, with Volunteer Fulton; Atlanta Union Mission, volunteer orientation; Children’s Restoration Network, Atlanta Day Women’s and Children’s Shelter, Genesis Shelter

 2002-2003

  • Presenting a proposed legislative amendment to The Fulton County Board of Commissioners, regarding driver education

  • Developing a marketing package for the proposed legislative amendment

  • Presenting the proposed amendment to Metro Area School Boards (Atlanta, Fulton, Dekalb, Clayton, Henry, Rockdale and Gwinnett County, and Decatur and  Marietta City)

  • Presenting the proposed driver education legislation to the Sub-Committee of the Education Committee of the Georgia Legislature

  • Lobbying to Fulton County City Municipalities, Metro County Boards of Commission, Georgia School Superintendents, Principals, Student Government Associations, and Parent Teacher Associations

  • Attending the Children’s Defense Fund Conference in Washington D.C.;

  • Participating in the Georgia State Capitol Tour

  • Volunteering at South Fulton Service Day

  • Attending FRESH Public Hearings

  • Participating in District 7’s Parent University and Quarterly Community Listening Sessions

  • Co-facilitating workshops at the Fulton County Youth Summit

  • Serving on a panel with the Chatham County Youth Commission, on “Developing a Youth Commission: A Living Experiment, a Critical Investment,” at the 18th Annual National Conference on Preventing Crime in the Black Community in Atlanta Georgia

  • Participating in leadership training workshops (Presentation Skills (provided by Toast Masters), Writing Skills (provided by VOX), Diversity Training (provided by the Metro Atlanta Boys and Girls Club), and team building)

  • Completing a 2002 Youth Agenda, modeled after the Georgia Children’s Agenda, an initiative of Georgian’s for Children.

  • Attending the Youth Summit in Washington D.C. (2002)
