Overview
Leadership. Service. Excellence. Success.
These are just a few of the many traits that
describe the Fulton County Youth Commission, its
members, and the honorable work that this
organization produces. Since its
inception, the Fulton County Youth Commission
has worked diligently to impact policy,
procedure and legislation relating to children,
youth, and families in Fulton County.
Sponsored by Commissioner Nancy A. Boxill and
former Fulton County Commissioner, Michael
Hightower, the Youth Commission commenced after
the Board of Commissioners passed a resolution
to implement the program, and has since been
coordinated through the Human Services
Department, Office of Children and Youth.
Adopted
from a Chatham County youth program in Savannah
Georgia, the Fulton County Youth Commission is
an exciting leadership and service program that
empowers youths to become knowledgeable and
involved in the local governmental process.
Through this program, the community’s brightest
adolescents communicate with their peers and
local government leaders to increase awareness
about the most pertinent issues facing Fulton
County’s children, youth, and families, by
offering creative and efficient suggestions
regarding governmental mandates and governmental
and community services.
Each
year, approximately twenty Fulton County
students in grades 8-11 are invited to join the
Fulton County Youth Commission after a rigorous
selection process of application and essay
submissions and interviews are completed.
Upon official induction into the Fulton County
Youth Commission, these 20 or so students then
become youth representatives as well as
informants to their peers, community leaders,
and Fulton County departments, providing youths
with a voice and the space to explore and
address the most dynamic concerns facing their
neighborhoods, schools, churches, and a plethora
of other individuals and organizations.
